Zendaya has found herself at the center of a debate over her behavior at the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week. The actress was criticized for remaining seated when Brigitte Macron approached her.
The Spider-Man star was sitting in the front row at the Louvre when Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, came over to greet her.
Video footage shows Zendaya apparently failing to notice Brigitte at first because she was speaking to another guest. The actress then looked up, smiled at France’s first lady and greeted her.

However, Zendaya remained seated. “Hello, it’s nice to meet you,” she said while shaking Brigitte’s hand.
The moment sparked a heated debate on social media, with users arguing over whether the actress should have stood up when greeting the French president’s wife.
“Zendaya, girl… you should have stood up when the First Lady of France tried to greet you,” one X user wrote. The post received around 27,000 likes and sparked a fierce debate in the comments.
Many considered the actress’s behavior to be simply rude.
“It doesn’t matter who is standing in front of you. You should stand up when greeting someone. It’s basic etiquette,” one commenter wrote.
“Definitely rude! You should never shake someone’s hand while remaining seated. Apparently, she was never taught that,” another agreed.
“For the first time, I’m seeing firsthand proof that Gen Z really doesn’t know basic manners. Although this seemingly unintentional display of superiority — refusing to stand when meeting someone — is quite surprising,” another user commented.
However, some people pointed out an important detail: shortly before Brigitte Macron approached Zendaya, Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH — the world’s largest luxury-goods company and the owner of Louis Vuitton — had also come over to greet her. And the actress did not stand up for him either.
“She didn’t even get up to shake Mr. Arnault’s hand. And he literally owns LVMH — essentially the entire fashion industry,” one user pointed out.
Another commenter noted that under traditional etiquette, it is customary to stand when greeting someone who is older or holds a higher position, particularly when the person is a country’s first lady or the owner of the brand you represent.
Still, others came to Zendaya’s defense and saw nothing offensive in her behavior.
“Why should she have to stand up for her? Zendaya isn’t a foreign diplomat or a French citizen,” one user argued.
“I’m not a fan of excessive protocol, especially if Zendaya wasn’t formally introduced to her as the First Lady of France. What matters to me is that she was polite and smiled genuinely. I prefer authentic emotions to forced courtesy. At the end of the day, it’s just a fashion show,” one fan wrote.
Others suggested that Zendaya simply did not have time to react.
“She clearly just wasn’t expecting someone to approach her. It’s not a big deal,” one user said.
