Michael Douglas Opens Up About His Wild Love Life: Co-Stars, Affairs and His Own ‘Mrs. Robinson’

15:40, October 8

Before settling down with Catherine Zeta-Jones in the 2000s, Michael Douglas was considered one of Hollywood’s most notorious womanizers.

Now, the 84-year-old actor has opened up in detail for the first time about the extent of his hypersexuality in his memoir, One Helluva Ride. In the book, he recalls affairs with co-stars, numerous infidelities and even his own version of the “Mrs. Robinson” story — a relationship that began when he was still a teenager.

Douglas’s interest in women began in his youth. He recalls his mother being called into school for a meeting and warned that her son was “getting too much attention from aggressively forward girls.”

“I was just a late bloomer, so all the girls thought I was cute. I hadn’t reached my full height yet and had no idea what was happening, but my hormones were already raging,” the actor recalled.

After his freshman year at the University of California, Douglas took a year off from his studies — and almost immediately began an affair with a friend of his mother’s.

One day, Michael suggested that they go for a motorcycle ride.

“She climbed on behind me and wrapped her arms tightly around me. It was a cold winter day, and as we rode, I felt her start pressing herself against me... When we got home, we didn’t waste any time,” he recalled.

According to Douglas, the relationship lasted for about two years whenever he returned home from college.

“It was complicated, and I never felt completely comfortable with it. But I was very young, and this beautiful, sophisticated woman wanted to spend time with me. Neither of us had any expectations,” the actor said.

He referred to her as his own “Mrs. Robinson,” a reference to the famous character from The Graduate.

“She taught me a lot about women and what they liked, and for a young man, that was very useful information! Honestly, when I watched The Graduate, I felt like I was watching a documentary,” Douglas joked.

After that, he said, he gained “a new confidence and ease around women.”

Soon afterward, he moved into a hippie commune in Santa Barbara and began a relationship with a woman named Kathy, moving in with her and her roommate.

But one day, Kathy left and never came back. Her friend confessed to Michael that she had been seeing another man and eventually ran off with him.

Douglas found a rather unusual way to cope with the breakup: “I got over it by sleeping with her roommate, who had been eyeing me for some time.”

A decade later, he ran into Kathy again. By then, she had married and divorced the man she had once left him for. Their romance resumed.

By that point, however, Douglas was no longer committed to monogamy.

“I was also seeing other women, including Nancy Pfister, whom I met in Aspen,” he wrote.

Affairs on Set

Douglas’s romantic adventures continued after he launched his acting career.

While filming Adam at 6 A.M. in 1970, he met Lee Purcell. Michael was single, while Lee was married, but the two began a “passionate affair.”

They had to keep their relationship hidden from the cast and crew, the residents of the town where they were filming and, of course, Lee’s husband.

“It was a passionate affair that lasted throughout the entire shoot,” the actor recalled.

A year later, Douglas was working on Summertree, where he met Brenda Vaccaro.

“She was the perfect woman. A talented and respected actress, funny, with an incredibly sexy voice. There was an immediate spark between us,” he recalled.

Their relationship became so serious that they even held a symbolic wedding ceremony in front of their friends.

But the long periods apart caused by their work took a toll on the romance. Brenda began seeing actor Don Stroud.

After hearing her speaking affectionately to him on the phone, Douglas realized that their relationship was over.

“After six years together, I packed my things and left. I walked to the car holding back tears,” he wrote.

Douglas later learned from mutual friends that Brenda regretted the breakup — particularly leaving him for Stroud.

Marriage, Affairs and a Secret Romance With Kathleen Turner

Soon afterward, Douglas met Diandra Luker at a pre-inauguration party for President Jimmy Carter.

“She was beautiful and smart,” the actor recalled.

Just eight weeks after meeting, they got married. Michael’s father, Kirk Douglas, paid for the wedding, which was held in the backyard of his home, followed by a reception at the nearby Beverly Wilshire hotel. In 1978, the couple welcomed their son, Cameron.

But even his love for his wife did not stop Douglas from embarking on new romances.

While working on Romancing the Stone, he fell in love with screenwriter Diane Thomas.

“Our affair was passionate and fun and became the foundation of a close friendship. But the truth was that my marriage was in trouble, and neither of us was happy,” the actor admitted.

Douglas claimed that Diandra wanted to “change” him, while his constant work away from home created additional tension. During the filming of the movie in 1984, the couple effectively took a break from their relationship.

And Douglas made the most of that break.

This time, his romantic partner was his co-star Kathleen Turner. For decades, both denied rumors that they had been involved, but Douglas has now finally confirmed them.

“Kathleen was smart, funny and sexy, with a deep, husky voice that became her trademark. I liked her immediately, and we felt a mutual attraction right away,” he wrote.

“Like every other man in the world at the time, Kathleen literally knocked me off my feet,” Douglas admitted.

Their secret affair ended after Diandra flew from Los Angeles to Mexico with their young son.

Even Basic Instinct Came With an Affair

Douglas had another affair while filming The War of the Roses — this time with an unnamed woman.

The truth came out after the actor called her one day without realizing that the conversation had been connected to a speakerphone. Douglas accidentally let slip his plans to meet his lover.

He then began working on Basic Instinct. Many people assumed the actor was having an affair with Sharon Stone, but in reality, he was seeing Jeanne Tripplehorn.

“Although our intimacy in real life was amazing, it made it difficult to film our love scenes on camera. In front of the crew, Jeanne was so nervous that she kept bursting into uncontrollable laughter,” Douglas recalled.

That same year, in 1992, the actor entered rehab for alcohol and drug addiction. Diandra caught him cheating again after he invited another woman to a hotel room.

His wife gave him an ultimatum: “Rehab or divorce.”

Although Douglas stopped drinking and using drugs, their marriage ended in 1995.

After the divorce, the actor embraced his freedom and dated several women. Among them was New York Times columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Maureen Dowd.

Douglas admired her “sharp mind and magnificent brains.” The relationship did not become romantic, but they remained friends.

“I’ll Be the Father of Your Children”

For years, Douglas continued living the life of a Hollywood womanizer — until he saw Catherine Zeta-Jones in the 1998 film The Mask of Zorro.

They met at the Deauville Film Festival. After an evening spent talking, Douglas suddenly blurted out:

“In a moment of temporary insanity, I blurted out, ‘I’ll be the father of your children.’”

After nine months of a long-distance relationship, they finally became a couple. But Catherine set a firm condition: she would only date him if he remained faithful to her.

That prompted Douglas to make “five quick phone calls.”

They married in 2000. Soon afterward, they welcomed their son Dylan and daughter Carys.

However, in August 2013, Catherine confirmed that they had decided to “take some time apart to evaluate and work on our marriage.”

The separation came just two months after Douglas linked the development of his throat cancer to oral sex. His spokesperson later retracted the remarks, and the actor himself said he “regretted any embarrassment” they had reportedly caused his wife.

In his memoir, Douglas went into detail about their separation.

“From the second we separated, I never stopped hoping we would reconcile. I love Catherine in a way I have never loved another woman. She is my wife, my best friend and my life partner. I could never lose her,” he wrote.

Less than a year later, the couple reunited.

When Douglas was asked this week how exactly he managed to win Catherine back, the actor reacted sharply.

“What do you mean, ‘win her back’? It was mutual... You know, we had problems, but I love her very much. And for 25 years now... Marriage takes a lot of work. So we’re fine. We’re good. That’s all I can say.”

Next month, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones will celebrate their 26th wedding anniversary.
