Residents of the English village of Bibury are fed up with the influx of tourists who behave as though they have arrived at a theme park. During peak season, up to 20,000 people a day descend on the village, despite its permanent population of just 600. Some locals have had enough and are considering moving away, the Daily Mail reports.
Located in Gloucestershire, Bibury is famous for its honey-colored cottages, picturesque scenery and historic Arlington Row. Last year, Forbes named it the most beautiful village in the world, prompting an even greater surge in visitors. Social media has turned the village into a popular photo backdrop, but, according to residents, many tourists forget that behind the charming façades are people’s actual homes.
Locals describe a series of shocking incidents. One family held a picnic in the front garden of someone else’s cottage, while other visitors peer through windows, knock on doors, climb over garden fences and trespass on private property for selfies. One tourist even threw stones at a mailbox in an attempt to provoke a reaction from the homeowners. Residents have been photographed in their own living rooms, and some visitors seem genuinely convinced that the villagers are part of the scenery.
“People come from all over the world and genuinely believe the village is a theme park,” said Michelle Follett-Holt, head of a local heritage organization. The term “Disneyfication” is regularly used to describe what is happening in Bibury, as tourists lose sight of the distinction between a living community and a picturesque attraction.
Local resident Philippa Curtis says social media images portray an idealized, peaceful version of Bibury, making it look like a film set. Steve Morton, who runs a local Facebook group, said his neighbor, Brian Scarda, had decided to move because the tourists had made his life unbearable. Visitors regularly ask him how much he is paid to “work” in the historic cottage where he lives.
The problem extends beyond invasions of privacy. Throughout the summer, tourists have been swimming in the River Coln, setting up sun loungers in the water, building makeshift dams and leaving rubbish behind, including dirty diapers. Local authorities plan to fence off certain sections of the river to protect swans, ducks, fish and other wildlife. Meanwhile, large tour buses clog the village’s narrow streets and are feared to be damaging the historic Swan Bridge, whose condition is now being inspected weekly.
Residents are divided over how to tackle the influx. One proposal is to build a large car and coach park outside Bibury and transport visitors into the center on dedicated shuttles. Opponents argue, however, that adding more parking spaces would simply attract even larger crowds.
The parish council has commissioned Oxford Brookes University to assess how many tourists Bibury can accommodate without harming residents’ quality of life or overwhelming its infrastructure. The findings will help local authorities decide whether additional parking is needed and what restrictions should be introduced.
Steve Morton, however, fears there may be no easy solution. Being named the “most beautiful village in the world” and featuring on British passports have turned Bibury’s popularity into a problem that residents can no longer manage on their own.
