Kim Kardashian has admitted that harsh criticism of her acting in All’s Fair left her questioning her abilities and even prompted her to offer to withdraw from her upcoming film The Fifth Wheel.
The 46-year-old star opened up about the experience in a new episode of The Kardashians, released on October 22. Following negative reviews of her portrayal of divorce lawyer Allura Grant in Hulu’s legal drama, Kardashian began to worry that the producers of her new movie might regret casting her.
“After all the criticism of All’s Fair, I felt insecure. I was thinking, ‘Maybe they want me to leave the movie? Maybe they’re so concerned that they don’t want my name attached to it anymore?’” Kardashian admitted.
She revealed that she even offered to step away from the project altogether to avoid creating problems for the production team.
“I said, ‘I totally understand. I can gracefully bow out, don’t worry.’ I wanted to be respectful — maybe that really would have been the right thing to do. I didn’t want people thinking, ‘Oh great, now we have to work with her… Get ready, we’re going to get the worst reviews in the world,’” the star explained.
Kardashian said the negative reviews pushed her to work even harder on the new film. The comedy is directed by Eva Longoria and also stars Brenda Song and Fortune Feimster.
“I thought, if I fail at this too, then it’s over for me,” Kardashian said.
Despite her fears, the star emphasized that she ultimately enjoyed working on the movie. The project came about after her agent, Brad Slater, suggested that comedy writer and producer Paula Pell develop a film starring Kardashian.
According to Kardashian, her agent encouraged her to try comedy because she has a knack for making people laugh, even if many people do not realize it.
Despite the criticism of All’s Fair, Kardashian has already responded to her detractors with her trademark sense of irony. After the series premiered, she shared screenshots on Instagram of posts on X mocking the acting and predictable storyline. One of the original posters, however, unexpectedly admitted to being so hooked on the show that they wanted to see 14 seasons.
Kardashian accompanied the post with a sarcastic caption, calling All’s Fair the most critically acclaimed series of the year.
In January, the star also discussed how she handles online negativity on her sister Khloé’s podcast. She said that while she sometimes prefers to ignore attacks, there are times when she feels it is necessary to respond quickly and directly to criticism and rumors.
