Generation Z is increasingly facing a paradox: young people want intimacy, yet real-life sexual relationships are becoming less common. And porn may not be to blame. According to 37-year-old adult film actress Alix Lynx, dating apps and social media have a far greater impact on modern romance, conditioning people to seek instant gratification and an endless stream of options, the New York Post reports.
The discussion centers on the so-called “sex recession” among Generation Z, a trend in which young adults report declining sexual activity despite wanting intimacy. Lynx, who entered the adult entertainment industry in 2014, believes that the habit of looking for relationships through a screen makes it harder for people to meet and connect in real life.
“Honestly, I think porn is the least of the problem. It’s always existed. Social media and dating apps are much bigger factors,” she told the New York Post.
Endless Swiping Instead of Real Dates
According to Lynx, dating apps create the illusion of virtually unlimited choice. Users can scroll through profiles, get matches and exchange messages indefinitely without ever committing to an actual date.
“Dating apps give you the feeling that there’s an endless supply of people. You can keep swiping, keep getting matches, and the process itself becomes a source of dopamine,” the actress explained.
As a result, getting to know someone can turn into an endless exchange of messages. Instead of meeting a person they like, users keep searching for someone even more attractive.
Lynx believes a similar mechanism operates on social media. As soon as someone new and interesting appears, attention shifts to them. The constant search for the next option makes it harder to focus on genuine interaction and build lasting relationships.
When the Screen Replaces Flirting
Another problem is the gradual loss of face-to-face communication skills. People become accustomed to meeting and flirting through messages, while in-person interactions begin to feel difficult and awkward.
Lynx compares social skills to muscles: if you do not use them, they weaken. In her view, constant interaction through screens can deprive young people of the experience they need to meet, flirt and develop relationships in real life.
The actress does not consider porn entirely harmless, however. She says staged scenes can create unrealistic expectations about sex and carry over into real-life relationships.
“I’ve had partners try to recreate things they saw in my scenes. I’d be sitting there thinking, ‘That’s something I do on set, not in real life.’ There’s a huge disconnect because porn is a performance, not a guide to intimacy,” she said.
Even Porn Viewers Want Emotional Connection
Lynx also pointed out that audiences for adult content may be looking for more than sexual arousal. They may also be seeking a sense of closeness. The article cites data from the search platform OnlySearch, which recorded 7.3 million searches in 2026, with the terms “couple” and “wife” ranking among its 20 most popular queries.
According to Lynx, interest in content that imitates romantic relationships reflects a broader need for emotional connection. However, search statistics alone do not prove that people are having sex more or less often. They simply indicate users’ interest in certain types of content.
The actress says she has also seen how digital habits affect relationships through her own work. According to her, some men message her from their workplaces instead of paying attention to their partners.
The central paradox Lynx highlights is that technology promises virtually unlimited access to dating and communication but does not guarantee genuine intimacy. The more time people spend searching for the perfect partner on a screen, the fewer opportunities they may have for real-life encounters, spontaneous flirting and relationships that develop outside an algorithm.
