Sierra and James Campisi wanted to do something special and authentic to who they are as a couple for their wedding. The New York City-based couple told PEOPLE they are both big Dungeons & Dragons fans and wanted to find a way to incorporate the passion into their big day.
“We had talked about the first dance and grand entrance, and we had decided that a sword fight would be something that would be really fun and would really speak to us, as well as just the whimsy that we really wanted to kind of fold into the wedding,” Sierra, 34, shares. “We hired a fight choreographer to choreograph our wedding and grand entrance, and then we did our own choreography for our first dance, because that was really where our priorities lay.”
James, 36, shares that they “wanted our wedding to be a lot of things.”
“We wanted to be a little bit fantastical, a little magical, and most importantly, we really wanted it to be fun,” he shares. “Fun for everybody involved, and also for ourselves. It was something we tossed the idea around, and we thought, what a way for that to be our first kind of showcase as a husband and wife.”
Three months before the wedding, the couple had their first sword-fighting lesson.
“We knew if we were gonna do this, we had to do it right,” Sierra says. “It’s not something that you can just wing it and hope for the best.”
“We had stage combat swords, but they are metal swords. If you got hit with it, it would hurt,” she explains. “We had to be super crisp on our choreography. We had three separate sessions of choreographer training, and then we did hours of training at home.”
Although they originally planned to do the fight after the first dance, they realized they wanted their first dance to feel peaceful, rather than feeling anxious about what was to come.
Only the DJ and wedding staff knew about the sword fight, and Sierra says their guests “loved it.”
