Johnny Depp is returning to studio movies for the first time in seven years with an unrecognizable role in Ebenezer, PEOPLE writes.
The actor, 63, is starring as Charles Dickens’ legendary A Christmas Carolcharacter, the curmudgeonly Ebenezer Scrooge, who is famously visited by three ghosts from the past, present and future to show him how his hatred and cruelty have affected him and will affect others.
“Ebenezer just sort of arrived in a weird way,” Depp tells PEOPLE at a New York City screening of the movie on Nov. 1. “It’s kind of like the first time you put the wardrobe on, and you feel that, like with any character, that becomes your kind of suit of armor.”
He continues, “So yeah, with Ebenezer, it’s not like some guy who needs a chiropractor. This is a guy who’s trying to make himself invisible to the world.”
As for how he got into character, Depp says his main goal was to understand why Scrooge was the way he was.
“That was the main sort of thing for me was the idea of the character,” he says. “Where’s the in? How do you find your way in and give him a history and a reason why he is this supposed kind of just horrific miser and all that ... So I, I was more interested in finding out why he was how he was.”
A source previously told PEOPLE, following Depp’s surprise appearance as Scrooge at San Diego Comic-Con in July, that the project “felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” for the actor.
“He’s been very excited to film Ebenezer. It’s a very special project for him,” they added.
The Oscar nominee stepped back from major Hollywood productions amid his highly publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. Their televised six-week defamation trial concluded in June 2022, when a jury found Heard liable on all three counts of defamation related to a 2018 op-ed she wrote. The jury also found Depp liable on one count of defamation in Heard’s countersuit. After initially appealing the verdict, the former couple reached a settlement in December 2022.
