A former Ohio State University professor who told police he killed his wife after becoming the target of an alleged sextortion scheme has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison, PEOPLE writes.
James S. Hill, 77, pleaded guilty to murder and cruelty to companion animals on Oct. 28, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE. A judge sentenced him the same day in Franklin County, Ohio.
Hill will serve 15 years to life for the murder conviction, with the possibility of parole after 15 years. He also received a 12-month sentence for the animal cruelty charge, which will run concurrently with his prison term, according to the judgment entry obtained by PEOPLE.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed the aggravated murder charge against him, according to the court documents.
The guilty plea comes nearly a year after Hill was accused of killing his wife, Mary Hill, 64, at their home in Upper Arlington, Ohio.
The case dates back to Nov. 9, 2025, when police were called to the couple’s home in Upper Arlington, Ohio, after Hill briefly contacted 911 asking for help, according to court documents cited by The Columbus Dispatch, ABC6 and Cleveland.com.
Investigators were told that Hill had been communicating with a woman he met on a dating site and had shared nude photos with her. He allegedly claimed the woman threatened to share the images unless he paid her $15,000, according to court documents cited by Cleveland.com.
Hill reportedly told investigators that he “could only think of one way out of the situation,” according to documents cited by 10TV.
He also allegedly described stabbing Mary in the chest while giving her a massage, apologizing to her as he did so, ABC6 reported. Mary was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hill also stabbed himself and was hospitalized following the incident, the outlet reported. Hill also told police he attempted to kill his dog after stabbing Mary, WCMH reported.
