American comedian Chris Rock has opened up about the reasons behind the breakdown of his longtime marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock. The 61-year-old entertainer admitted that his obsession with pornography, infidelity and failure to be a good husband ultimately destroyed their relationship.

“I was not a good husband,” Rock confessed in an interview with GQ for its special Men of the Year issue.

The comedian also revealed that he used to spend a great deal of time watching pornography but has completely given up the habit in recent years.

“I watched a lot of porn. I don't watch porn anymore. It's been five or six years,” he said.

Rock did not shy away from admitting to other mistakes he made during his marriage to Malaak, now 57. He said he failed to listen to his wife, was not kind enough to her and cheated on her with three different women.

“It's not something I'm proud of, but it's something I had to go through,” the comedian admitted.

He compared his behavior to the story of a Marvel character who initially tests his superpowers, acts like a self-absorbed jerk and eventually learns to use his abilities for the benefit of others.

“They're racing trains, lifting ocean liners, trying to get to the sun, and then they crash because they realize they're not God,” Rock explained.

“I was testing my powers. Eventually, I realized I'm not God, and I'm not even close. It really humbled me — and rightfully so,” he added.

Chris Rock and Malaak Compton-Rock married in 1996 and have two daughters: Lola, 24, and Zahra, 22. The couple announced their separation in 2014 after 18 years together, and their divorce was finalized in 2016.

“After much contemplation and 19 years of marriage, Chris and I have decided to go our separate ways,” Malaak said in a statement released in 2014.

Despite their split, the former couple have maintained a relationship for the sake of their children. In May this year, they attended the graduation ceremony of their daughter Zahra, who graduated from the University of Southern California, together.

Following his divorce, Rock dated actress Megalyn Echikunwoke, with their relationship lasting from 2016 to 2020. In 2020, he was linked to Carmen Ejogo, while in 2022, reports connected him to Lake Bell. In March this year, news emerged of his new romance with Simone Henao.
