Bob Dylan Meets Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican Wearing a Hoodie and Gloves

11:37, November 5

Legendary musician Bob Dylan met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, but even an audience with the head of the Roman Catholic Church was not enough to make him abandon his signature look.

The 85-year-old singer appeared before the pontiff wearing a black coat, a hooded sweatshirt and black gloves. He kept his hood up throughout the meeting and carried a black umbrella.

The private audience took place on Wednesday in the lavish Apostolic Palace. Pope Leo XIV, who turned 71 in October, was dressed in his traditional white cassock.

Vatican official Father Antonio Spadaro, a Jesuit priest known for his connections in the entertainment industry, revealed on Instagram that he had helped arrange the meeting.

“It was impossible not to feel moved by the realization that you had become part of a meeting that will truly go down in history. It felt as though anything could happen with every step through the Apostolic Palace!” he wrote.

The Vatican newspaper also reported on the encounter, referring to the musician by his birth name, Robert Allen Zimmerman. He was born in Duluth, Minnesota, before becoming one of the most influential singer-songwriters in music history.

Pope Leo XIV, a native of Chicago, is known to be a fan of Dylan's music. In the foreword to a book published in July, the pontiff even quoted the singer's 1963 anti-war song “Go Away You Bomb,” which protested against nuclear weapons.
