American rap singer Grand Daddy I.U. (real name - Ayub Bey) passed away at the age of 55, People reported.
The cause of the artist's death was not disclosed, but his friend, producer Pete Rock, reported that the performer "died peacefully in his sleep."
"No, I am not okay. I'm devastated. Anyone who really knows me knows how much pure love and respect I had for him and out of respect for him and his family, I'm staying quiet right now," the statement read. "I do not need to post pictures nor stories to profess anything. I pray for a peaceful and easy transition," wrote a representative of the musician on Instagram (the social network is banned in Russia; owned by Meta Corporation, which is recognized in Russia as extremist and banned).
The rapper became widely known in 1990 when he released his debut album Smooth Assassin. The record included the tracks Something New and Sugar Free. Four years later, Grand Daddy I.U. presented a new album called Lead Pipe. A third LP, Stick to the Script, was released in 2007, and in 2021, the hip-hop singer released his last single, Stay Fly.
