The dance of 353 ballerinas on pointe shoes has set a new world record. Hundreds of young dancers in white tutus and tightly coiffed hair gathered at New York's Plaza Hotel to break the world record for pointe dancing, AP reports.
The performance was produced by the Youth of America Grand Prix, a ballet scholarship program that is celebrating its 25th anniversary with three nights of performances at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.
The dance was attended by ballerinas aged 9 to 19 years old, applying for scholarships, as well as professional dancers who are graduates of the program.
To the music of Tchaikovsky, the ballerinas stood on pointe shoes and quickly shifted their weight from one foot to the other for a full minute—a step called bourre.
Tina Shea, a Guinness World Records judge, announced the results: “353, that's a new Guinness World Record! Congratulations!"
