Today, May 22, 2024, Charles Aznavour would have celebrated his 100th birthday. On this day, France honors the legendary chansonnier.
Concert at the Grand Rex
On May 25, a big evening dedicated to the work of Charles Aznavour will be held at the Grand Rex Hotel in Paris. The most famous songs of Aznavour will be performed by Jules Grison, accompanied by a symphony orchestra, arranged by Nobuyuki Nakajima (Gainsbourg Symphonic, Piaf Symphonique).
Song Hall: Show with prisoners
Opened as part of the Vis-a-vis festival from May 17 to 24, the Song Hall in Paris presents the show “And yet – Aznavour les 100 ans.” The show features twelve student artists from Hall High School and eight amateur artists from Moe Penitentiary. Together they perform Aznavour's songs.
Aznavour at the Paris Philharmonic
On September 28, the Lamoureux Orchestra, accompanied by several invited singers, will again perform the singer’s repertoire—and with the support of the Aznavour Foundation. This concert will be held as part of special days dedicated to Armenia and its culture, from September 26 to 29.
100 CDs for the centenary
On May 10, the Panthéon label (Universal Music France) released an unusual complete box set. It brings together everything that Charles Aznavour recorded—in French, English, Italian, Spanish or German, live or in the studio, duet or solo, albums, EPs, singles, alternative versions, records for children, etc.—during his long career. The box set, worth about 300 euros, contains a 64-page booklet with rare photographs.
Stamp in honor of the singer
On June 3, La Poste will launch a collector's stamp featuring Charles Aznavour. The portrait of the singer was painted by Hom Nguyen, a French artist of Vietnamese origin, inspired by the photography of Roger Kasparian, a famous French-Armenian photographer who immortalized the 1960s with talent. The stamp will retail at 1.96 euros.
Garden in Paris
On May 22, a garden named after Charles Aznavour will open in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, at the foot of the Champs Elysees. Ledoyen, part of the Champs-Elysees gardens.
Memorial plaque in Paris
On May 16, a memorial plaque in honor of Charles Aznavour was unveiled in Paris at 22 Rue Navarenne in the 9th arrondissement. It was there that the Aznavourian family lived during World War II. The ceremony was attended by Armenian Ambassador to France Hasmik Tolmajyan and the head of the 9th arrondissement Delphine Bürkli.
Aznavour Literary Prize “Words of Love”
The Aznavour Prize, founded by Mischa Aznavour, celebrates love in contemporary literature. The 2024 winner will be announced on Wednesday. Four finalists are competing for it.
