On the occasion of the 100th birth anniversary of Charles Aznavour, we have decided to recall five funny stories from his life that speak a lot about his character and career.
His career took off after a nose job
In the 1950s, Charles Aznavour had rhinoplasty. The great Edith Piaf convinced him to have a nose job. She even paid for the operation in the US.
“You can’t walk around with such a switch,” the legendary singer, who took Aznavour under her wing, regularly said. After this, Aznavour's career took off.
Johnny Hallyday lived with Aznavour for 2 years
In the early 1960s, young Johnny Hallyday lived with Charles Aznavour for two years. Aznavour gave Hallyday valuable advice, such as not to lie about his origins. It was during this period that Aznavour wrote the song “Retiens la nuit” for the youth idol.
He was censored several times
Surprisingly, Charles Aznavour, was censored several times by the French Radio and Television Committee. In 1955, his song "Après l'amour," which depicts a couple in bed after making love, was banned from radio broadcast because it was considered too erotic. The same fate befell his songs "Je veux te dire adieu" and "Moi j'faire mon rond" in 1956.
The maestro liked rap
Charles Aznavour did not hide his love for the work of rappers and never ceased to defend this musical style. “We [pop singers] don’t have music, we didn’t invent any rhythms, we always took someone else’s. Therefore, we must bring into our family those who work on the text,” Aznavour had told Le Parisien in 2008.
He loved gadgets
Charles Aznavour collected gadgets. He liked to buy new items from all over the world. “My father always had a camera in his hands. I especially remember his digital cameras. He was always on the cutting edge of technology,” Mischa Aznavour had told AFP. But why did he love gadgets so much? “When I was a child, I didn’t have many toys. That’s probably why…” had explained Charles Aznavour.
The hero of the adventures of Asterix and Obelix
Charles Aznavour is the hero of the adventures of Asterix and Obelix. In 2019, the 38th book in the series was published - “The Daughter of Vercingetorix”, in which the image of the pirate was copied from the chansonnier. The heroes of the comic also often refer in their dialogues to the lyrics of famous Aznavour songs.
