Flowers for the home and beyond: A mistake that can leave a hydrangea without flowers

21:04, July 12

Hydrangeas are stunning garden plants with large flowers that look spectacular in the garden. But how to ensure their flowering and avoid mistakes. According to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), there are many different types of hydrangeas, but they all have the same growing conditions.

Hydrangeas are hardy and can withstand many conditions, but proper care is important, especially if you recently purchased a hydrangea, Express writes.

The RHS recommended watering newly planted plants during the first growing season from spring to summer. Even mature plants will benefit from watering during droughts, as well as mulching to retain moisture. Regularly check the humidity level of plants in containers and ensure they do not dry out. In summer, move containers to a shaded area to reduce drying out.

After planting, it is recommended to feed hydrangeas with regular fertilizer. However, according to experts, regular feeding of rooted plants is not required. In fact, feeding too much can result in "soft, leafy growth" and the plants are "less likely to develop flower buds." Feeding too much can also put hydrangeas at greater risk of frost damage, which can lead to plant death.

Other ways to help hydrangeas grow throughout the year include pruning, but timing depends on the variety.

Hydrangea bigleaf can be pruned lightly but regularly in mid-spring to encourage the growth of new flowers.
