Alexis Ohanian has Lyme disease. The Reddit co-founder revealed this in a series of posts on X, saying that doctors informed him of the diagnosis after he underwent several medical procedures.

“After doing a full range of medical examinations, tests, etc., I discovered that I have Lyme disease,” he said. “Fortunately, there are no symptoms, but I will treat.”

Ohanian said that although he has a family history of the disease, the diagnosis took him by surprise because he does not fall into the group that is typically affected by the disease geographically.

“I have a loved one who had this disease several years ago, he had a lot of symptoms, etc., and he just didn’t know what was wrong with him until he was diagnosed,” Ohanian said. “I spend so little time in the wilderness/northeast and this was a big surprise to me.”

Ohanian said he would “take antibiotics” to fight the disease.

The Mayo Clinic describes Lyme disease as “an illness caused by Borrelia bacteria,” adding that “people usually get Lyme disease from the bite of a tick that carries the bacteria.” Although "ticks that can carry Borrelia bacteria live in much of the United States," the disease is "most common in the Upper Midwest, Northeastern, and Mid-Atlantic states" domestically, and "is also common in Europe and other countries."
