The daughter of the late Colombian artist Fernando Botero has helped transform the streets and squares of Rome into an open-air museum displaying eight of her father's famous three-dimensional, whimsical sculptures.
The exhibition was organized as a tribute to Botero, who died on September 15, 2023 at the age of 91 in Monaco, where he had a studio. The artist lived also for many years in the Italian town of Pietrasanta in the Tuscany region, where he was buried next to his third wife, artist Sofia Vari, AP reports.
"I'm sure my father would be very touched because Italy has always been his second home," his daughter Lina Botero told private Italian television TV2000.
All the statues presented at the exhibition were created by Botero while he lived in Italy. His attachment to Italy was partly due to his artistic affinity with the Renaissance masters.
Although his impressive bronze sculptures have been exhibited in the parks and alleys of many European and Latin American capitals, in Rome they can be seen for the first time on such a scale. The exhibition will run until October 1.
Art lovers can follow the Botero path, starting from the central park of Villa Borghese, where the "Reclining Woman" looks out over the rooftops of Rome towards St. Peter's Basilica from the Pincio terrace. In Piazza del Popolo, the Adam and Eve sculptures face each other. The horse with a bridle is located on the central Roman shopping street Via del Corso, and the journey ends near Piazza di Spagna with the “Seated Woman.”
Lorenzo Zichichi, representing one of the co-organizers of the exhibition, said it would be a mistake to call the sculptures fat. “Botero always said that he never drew fat women and never sculpted fat women,” Zichichi said. “What fascinated him was the volume.”
To note, three sculptures—“Smoking Woman”, “Greek Warrior,” and “Cat”—by Botero are installed at the Cafesjian Center for the Arts on the Cascade in downtown Yerevan.
