World's most expensive wedding party heading to UK

21:16, July 25

The world's most expensive wedding party is heading to the UK. Prince Harry and Boris Johnson are among the guests invited to the $600m UK portion of the wedding for the son of Asia's richest man, The Independent reports.

In mid-July, celebrities from around the world descended on Mumbai for the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, which culminated in three days of lavish celebrations.

Now the Ambanis are set to once again take centre stage in the world with an extraordinary two-month party in the UK.

The festivities are expected to continue for several more months, with celebrations set to resume at the historic Stoke Park Country Club. The seven-star hotel was bought by the Ambani family in 2021 for £57m and featured on the big screen in Bridget Jones's Diary, when Hugh Grant's character falls into the water while rowing a boat. Some of the guests who attended the Mumbai wedding, such as Boris and Carrie Johnson, who were reportedly paid to attend, may reappear at the celebrations. The couple may be joined by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are rumored to be on the UK guest list.

However, the event is not without controversy. Around 850 members of the golf club have been warned to stay away as the family has booked the hotel until September for renovations ahead of the event. The Ambanis are reported to have clashed with the local council as questions have been raised about whether they are properly abiding by the terms of the estate’s lease, the Financial Times reports. The lease clearly states that the site is to be used as a commercial property and not a private one, making the decision to close the hotel to the public while keeping it open for the family controversial.

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant are estimated to have spent $600 million on various wedding events, which will continue for another two months. Anant is the son of India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, and Radhika is the heiress of a pharmaceutical dynasty.
