New York to get enormous, 16-foot-tall ‘pigeon’

19:27, August 6

A massive, 16-foot-tall pigeon is set to appear atop New York’s High Line Park. The park’s prominent plinth will feature “Dinosaur,” a hyper-realistic aluminum pigeon sculpture by Bogota-born, Paris-based artist Ivan Argote, CNN reports.

“The name Dinosaur references the scale of the sculpture and the pigeon’s ancestors, who millions of years ago dominated the globe just as we humans do today,” Argote said. “The name also references the extinction of the dinosaurs. Like them, we will one day be gone, but perhaps the remnants of humanity will live on—as pigeons do—in the dark corners and crevices of future worlds. I feel like this sculpture might evoke a strange sense of attraction, seduction, and fear in New Yorkers.”

Like many New Yorkers, pigeons are not native to the region. They are believed to have been brought to the city by European settlers in the 17th century. And now, pigeons thrive in their natural habitat and fill the sidewalks. The city's pigeon population is estimated to be larger than its human population, with about nine million birds compared to the nearly eight million people who live in the Big Apple.
