Films created with artificial intelligence (AI) could be in contention for the top Oscar awards, the BBC reports.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued new rules that say the use of AI and other digital tools “will not help or hurt a film’s chances of being nominated.”
Generative AI, which can create texts, images, audio, and video in response to simple text prompts, has helped create some of the films that won top awards this year.
However, the Academy said it will still consider human input when choosing the winners.
Under further rule changes, Academy members must now watch all nominated films in each category to take part in the final round of voting that will determine the winners.
The use of AI in film has become a hot topic after Adrien Brody won the Oscar for best actor for his role in The Brutalist. In the film, generative AI was used to improve an actor’s accent when he spoke Hungarian.
It was then revealed that similar voice-cloning technology had been used to improve the voice of a singer in the Academy Award-winning musical Emilia Perez.
The technology’s ability to quickly change or adapt to a performer’s tone and style, or perform edits such as subtly changing someone’s appearance, has helped it become more popular in music and film production.
But the use of AI remains controversial, with actors and writers raising concerns about the material used to train such tools and the impact it could have on their livelihoods.
