Pop star Lorde is facing heavy criticism after a candid Rolling Stone interview in which she admitted to watching the leaked sex tape of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee — and later referencing it in a new song.
The 28-year-old singer revealed she stumbled upon the infamous recording after a psychedelic therapy session. “I thought it was so beautiful. Maybe it’s strange that I watched it, but I saw two people madly in love with each other. There was this purity to it… They were jumping off a boat, like kids — so free. And I thought: ‘Wow. To be that free is to be vulnerable,’” she told the magazine.
Lorde later alludes to the tape again in Current Affairs, a track from her upcoming album Virgin.
Fans have slammed the singer for “romanticizing” a video that, by Pamela’s own words, changed her life forever and caused her years of pain.
A source close to the 57-year-old actress told the Daily Mail that Anderson hates any reminders of the scandal: “That tape changed her life forever, and there’s a lot of hurt attached to it. Pamela hates when this comes up again — whether it’s the Pam & Tommy series, gossip, or new interviews.”
The intimate video of Pamela and Tommy Lee was stolen and leaked without their consent in the 1990s. Electrician Rand Gauthier infamously stole a safe from their garage, which contained the tape. It was later distributed online and made millions — but Anderson and Lee themselves saw almost none of that profit.
Despite the controversy, Pamela has worked hard to reclaim her career and public image. She’s been praised for her performance in The Last Showgirl, and has embraced a more natural look, appearing at events without makeup or Botox as she champions aging gracefully.
According to the source, Pamela wants people to remember her for her new projects — not Baywatch or the leaked video. “She wants to focus on meaningful work, to show her talent, and stay far from the past,” the insider said.
While Pamela prepares for her next role in the comedy Naked Gun alongside Liam Neeson, she knows the scandal may come up again. “She’s not mad at Lorde — she doesn’t even know who that is,” the source added. “But she wishes this would stop resurfacing. For her, it’s just another headache and painful memories she has to relive all over again.”
