This autumn, Yerevan once again transforms into the capital of imaginative worlds as it hosts the 17th International Animation and Comics Art Festival “ReA” (ReAnimania). Before the screenings and workshops begin, a press conference was held to reveal what makes this year’s edition special.

For seventeen years, ReA has turned Armenia’s capital into a space where worlds converge — professional and fantastical, European and Armenian, digital and handcrafted. Organizers have promised a vibrant week filled with screenings, workshops, meetings, and exhibitions.

The festival holds special significance for Armenia, as the level of Armenian animation continues to rise each year, becoming an active part of the international professional community.

“Major changes are taking place in Armenia’s film industry — new laws are being reformed, funds are being created, and programs are being launched to bring back young specialists educated abroad,” noted Daniel Danielyan, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of the Republic of Armenia.

“It’s important to understand that ReAnimania is not just a film festival — it’s a full-fledged platform. It fosters new directions, professional exchanges, and collaborations that help Armenia become a regional hub of animation art.”

A Grand Opening and World-Class Guests

The official opening ceremony will take place at Moscow Cinema, followed by the screening of “The Magnificent Life of Marcel Pagnol”, a French-Belgian film directed by Sylvain Chomet.

Among the international guests are Pixar director Madeleine Sharafian, one of the creators of Elio, who will conduct a workshop at the TUMO Center, and Oscar winner Michaël Dudok de Wit, whose The Red Turtle and Father and Daughter (Academy Award winner for Best Short Film) will be screened in Yerevan.

Also attending are members of the Netflix “Arcane” creative team — Pascal Charriau, Cécile Ergo-Essaim, and Aurélien Ressancourt — who will host a masterclass about the show’s visual and storytelling process.

Comics, Art, and Creativity

Artists Lorenzo Mattotti (creator of this year’s official festival poster), Charles Berberian, Fermín Solís, and Javier Recio Gracia will hold exhibitions and workshops throughout the week.

Within the ReA Comics program, a comics competition featuring 15 international projects will take place, and for the first time, several graphic novels translated into Armenian will be presented to the public.

Strengthening Armenia’s Place in Global Cinema

“ReAnimania has become a professional platform where Armenian cinema earns international recognition. Golden Apricot and ReAnimania — these two festivals are the flagships that represent Armenia in the global cultural space,” said David Banuchyan, Director of the Armenian National Film Center.

It was also announced that starting in 2026, a large-scale program for the digital restoration of Armenia’s film heritage will begin. Twenty-six classic films are already set for restoration, with ten scheduled to return to the big screen in the near future.
