The New York Post highlights a growing trend: more and more single millennial women are admitting they feel disappointed — even drained — by their friendships with married peers. Viral TikTok discussions and social-media confessionals have turned this from a private frustration into a collective experience, and it seems the issue has been brewing for years.
According to many women, the dynamic has become one-sided. Single friends pour time, money, and emotional energy into other people’s weddings, baby showers, pregnancies, and family events — yet receive little of the same support in return.
Meanwhile, they’re expected to “understand,” “be flexible,” and “adjust.” But when it comes to celebrating their milestones — a promotion, a move, travel, professional success — the response is often silence.
One of the most discussed points cited by the New York Post: single women say that even a simple meetup turns into a monologue from the married friend about kids, household chaos, and family logistics.
But the moment the single woman tries to talk about herself, the conversation collapses instantly:
a phone in hand, a distant look, an abrupt change of topic.
It’s this contrast that fuels exhaustion and the feeling of invisibility.
The comments under these discussions are filled with thousands of similar stories:
• “We’re expected to sacrifice for their families, but our achievements are ignored.”
• “My friend’s pregnancy doesn’t make my accomplishments less important.”
• “I stopped sharing anything personal — it’s not support, it’s voyeurism.”
• “The moment I start talking, they’re already staring at their phones.”
For many millennial women, this has become a reason to rethink what they truly want from close female friendships — and to recognize the line between genuine connection and emotional labor carried by only one person.
A generation raised on the idea of “sisterhood” is now openly insisting that support must go both ways.
