The premiere of A Winter's Song took place in Yerevan on December 4 — right at that moment of the season when the holiday mood begins to crystallize and all you want is a little light, warmth, and gentle pre-New Year chaos. Director Angela Asatryan leans fully into this atmosphere: soft, wintry, intimate. She builds a narrative where music becomes the guiding thread, and Armenia reveals itself through details instantly familiar to anyone who has ever spent a winter in Yerevan.

At the center of the story is Liana, played by Krista Marina — a young woman who loses her footing after her father’s death. She arrives in Armenia from California, returning to her ancestral homeland in search of inspiration that has long slipped away from her. Armenia is recognizable on screen through small, telling moments: hospitality, openness, good food, and cherished family rituals. These touches create a quiet, enveloping warmth that gently pulls the viewer into the story alongside the heroine.

The ensemble cast — Krista Marina, Edgar Damadyan, Jessie Bedrossian, and Judah McFadden — performs without force or theatricality, as if simply living the lives of their characters. Their interactions feel like those of real friends: people who know the sound of each other’s laughter and the kind of glance that offers comfort. This effortless authenticity is what makes the film convincing.

Music becomes the film’s central motif — a language through which the characters express what is hardest to admit aloud. It connects Liana and David, helps them navigate their doubts, and searches for answers where words fail. And it’s music that raises the film’s key question: what choice will the heroine make when she faces her moment of truth? Will she be able to believe in herself again, trust others, allow new feelings to grow? Will Armenia inspire her deeply enough to help her find her path forward?

Asatryan crafts a rom-com that doesn’t hide behind irony. It remains sincere, tender, at times even naïve — and it is precisely this sincerity that evokes the winter feeling people return to in December cinema. Winter Song doesn’t aim to surprise; it simply invites you into a world where kindness works, friendship steadies you, and love arrives as a natural continuation of one’s journey.
