The battle of the sexes is… getting smellier. On average, a person passes gas up to 23 times a day, but not all farts are created equal. Studies show that women’s farts tend to smell stronger than men’s — and there’s a scientific reason behind it, reports the New York Post.
Next time you catch a whiff of your wife’s gas, take heart: that smell might actually indicate a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
Back in 1998, Dr. Michael Levitt, a gastroenterologist famously nicknamed the “King of Gas,” set out to determine which compounds make farts so odorous. He recruited 16 healthy volunteers and fitted them with special devices to collect gas after eating beans or taking a laxative.
Levitt’s team analyzed the samples using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, while a panel of “sniff-test” judges rated the odors on a scale from 0 to 8 — without knowing they were smelling human farts.
The research found that sulfur compounds, especially hydrogen sulfide (the notorious “rotten egg” smell), are the main culprits. While men produced a larger volume of gas, women’s farts contained a higher concentration of hydrogen sulfide, making them smell stronger.
Interestingly, studies also show women are more embarrassed about farting, while men tend to be less concerned if others hear or smell them.
Here’s the twist: that foul odor may actually be beneficial.
Hydrogen sulfide, present in small doses in women’s farts, can protect brain cells and potentially reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. It helps neurons communicate and declines with age, especially in patients with the disease.
In 2021, researchers at Johns Hopkins tested hydrogen sulfide compounds in genetically modified mice designed to mimic Alzheimer’s. After 12 weeks, the mice showed a 50% improvement in memory and motor skills compared to a control group, remembering platform locations better and moving more actively.
While it’s not yet clear whether humans would see the same effects, scientists suggest that women’s “smelly” farts might secretly stimulate the brain.
So next time you pass gas, ladies, take a deep breath — it might just be good for your brain!
