From blind dates to Tinder, ghosting to love-bombing, the dating world is constantly evolving — and 2026 promises to bring a host of new and unexpected trends.

According to a global study by dating app happn, the upcoming year will see concepts ranging from “sex-care” to the rise of relationship allies. But the most unsettling prediction? The emergence of AI “situationships.”

Artificial intelligence is increasingly part of daily life, and experts predict it will soon play a role in emotional preparation for dating. Chatbots may be used as “emotional mirrors,” helping users practice communication skills and explore their feelings safely.

In the study, 41% of UK respondents said they would be comfortable if their partner maintained a close emotional connection with AI, while 43% expressed discomfort, and 16% considered it a form of emotional cheating. Experts warn that while AI can aid in developing relationship skills, there’s a fine line between support and dependence.

Beyond AI, 2026 is expected to see a rise in “sex-care”, where sexual intimacy is approached as a form of self-care, as well as a return to genuine romantic gestures — gifts, flowers, and love notes are set to make a comeback.

The Return of Lavender Marriages: How Gen Z is Redefining Partnerships

Historically, lavender marriages — unions where one spouse is gay and the other heterosexual — were tools for protection, allowing LGBTQ+ individuals to hide their sexuality and avoid societal scrutiny. Today, however, Gen Z is reinterpreting this concept.

Young people are seeking reliable partners for shared life goals, prioritizing financial stability, trust, and support over traditional romantic ideals. “In a world where the classic love script doesn’t fit everyone, modern lavender marriages provide a way to build a stable life with someone who truly understands you,” explains Channa Bromley, founder of the Metamorphosis Relationship Coaching Institute.

Psychologists caution that without clear boundaries, platonic partners can develop emotional attachments that jeopardize the friendship and emotional stability of the relationship. “Even with rules, there’s no guarantee of happiness,” warns Christine DeVore, a licensed clinical psychologist.

Experts recommend open discussions about emotional intimacy and periodic reviews of legal and financial arrangements. Only then can a lavender marriage remain balanced and harmonious.
