New tragic details have surfaced in the murder of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Reiner, after the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health released their death certificates, Page Six reports.
According to official documents, the couple died within minutes after sustaining multiple stab wounds inflicted by another person. Experts confirmed that the manner of death has been ruled a homicide.
Rob and Michelle’s bodies were cremated, and their ashes were released to the couple’s son, Jake Reiner. Earlier reports stated that the couple was found dead by their 28-year-old daughter, Romy Reiner, at the family’s home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles. Sources indicated that both victims had their throats slit.
The main suspect in the case is the couple’s son, Nick Reiner, who was arrested several hours after the tragedy. He has reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has struggled with drug addiction for many years. Nick has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of multiple victims. He will remain in solitary confinement until a court hearing scheduled for January 7. The defense is expected to enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.
According to investigators, on the eve of the tragedy, Rob and Michelle took Nick with them to a Christmas party at Conan O’Brien’s home, fearing to leave him alone due to his deteriorating mental state. Witnesses claim that Nick behaved erratically during the event and got into an argument with his parents. One month before the murders, his medications had been changed by doctors, which, according to sources, led to even more unstable and dangerous behavior.
Rob Reiner is also survived by his adopted daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his first marriage to Penny Marshall.
