Many New York women, fed up with superficial dating and endless dating apps, are finding an unusual way to spend their time — with shelter dogs, The New York Post reports.
Lauren Wire, a public relations professional, shared her experience: “Dating apps can feel like just another item on your to-do list, whereas time with a dog is simple and joyful,” she says. “Also, dogs talk less,” she jokes.
Over the weekend, Wire visited a local animal shelter where people can foster dogs temporarily — a perfect spot for those seeking companionship without the drama. “Dogs provide emotional relief, while dates can be draining,” she adds.
For many New York women exhausted by the “dating game,” spending time with dogs has become a real lifesaver.
“In a city with so many options, people sometimes forget how to just be present,” Wire explains. “I’ve been on plenty of dates that weren’t terrible, just forgettable. With dogs, you always get joy and warmth.”
Experts note that walking and caring for dogs delivers immediate emotional benefits. Animals greet you with genuine happiness, without judgment or pressure. “It’s incredibly rewarding and soothing for your nervous system,” says Shamyra Howard, a licensed clinical social worker and sexual wellness expert.
Some women, like Cole Reifsnider, have even found love through volunteer dog programs. “My fiancé and I met while caring for shelter dogs,” she says. “It’s a chance to have real conversations with people you might never meet otherwise.”
Dog outings also help the animals themselves — reducing stress, giving exercise, and sometimes even leading to adoption.
Viveca Chow, content creator and longtime volunteer at the ACC shelter, explains: “We can learn so much from these animals. Even now that I’m married, I love spending time with shelter dogs — they deserve the best.”
Lauren Wire adds with a smile: “If I had to choose between a husband and a dog, I’d pick the dog.”
