As women get older, they often become more confident in their sexuality, gain a better understanding of their own desires and become less concerned with other people’s opinions. According to an expert, these qualities can be particularly appealing to younger men, although relationships with a significant age gap also come with their own challenges.
Tammy Nelson, a certified sexologist, sex therapist and integrative relationship specialist based in Los Angeles, told Fox News Digital that she has noticed growing interest in such couples.
“Relationships between older women and younger men are now quite common. I know plenty of older women, including women my own age, who are dating younger men or are attracted to them,” she said.
According to Nelson, women can become more confident and comfortable expressing their sexuality as they grow older.
“As women mature, get to know their bodies better and embrace their sexuality, they worry less about how other people perceive them. That’s when they realize that sexuality comes from within,” the expert explained.
A 2026 survey by dating website Ashley Madison found that 45% of its female members said they reached their sexual peak after the age of 40.
Based on her conversations with couples in which the woman is older, Nelson said one factor behind the attraction may be that younger men feel more comfortable discussing their sexual desires and needs openly with their partners.
Many women also enter a new phase of life after raising their children. In these relationships, younger men may feel less pressure to get married or start a family immediately.
“They really are on equal footing in the relationship,” Nelson emphasized. “At some point, you realize that you deserve pleasure. And what exactly brings you pleasure? It’s a whole new, exciting stage of life,” she added.
Relationships with a significant age difference are not without their difficulties, particularly when partners begin thinking about a future together.
According to Nelson, tension can arise from differing life circumstances, expectations about caring for one another and financial concerns. Partners may also have different views on marriage, having children, retirement and long-term plans.
Cultural differences can sometimes present another obstacle.
“It can be frustrating when the person next to you doesn’t know who the Grateful Dead are, has never been to a Rolling Stones concert or simply doesn’t understand the cultural references you grew up with. There’s something comforting about being with someone who grew up in the same world as you,” the expert said.
However, these differences can also be an advantage, allowing partners to introduce each other to new perspectives, interests and musical tastes.
“You can learn from each other, share different ways of seeing the world, exchange playlists and discover new music,” Nelson noted.
In conclusion, the specialist urged women not to assume that desire, sexuality and intimacy have an expiration date.
“We used to think that once menopause arrived, you were practically falling off a cliff and that was the end of everything. But that’s simply not the case anymore,” she stressed.
“If we’re alive, we want to feel alive.”
