A new study reveals that the peak of sexual desire doesn’t happen during the teenage years — and it occurs later for both men and women than many people assume.
The Estonian research, based on a survey of 73,000 participants, examined how age, gender, relationship status, sexual orientation, parenthood, relationship satisfaction, education, and job level influence sexual satisfaction.
According to Lovehoney sex and relationships expert Annabelle Knight, this term refers to the moment when libido and sexual responsiveness are at their highest.
She explains that many people imagine it as a period when someone is capable of having more frequent and higher-quality sex. However, it’s not a fixed window — and it’s not a target to chase.
Knight emphasizes that desire, performance, and pleasure naturally fluctuate over time due to health, stress, hormones, confidence, and relationships. A peak is just one chapter in a long and changing sexual story.
This is highly individual. But people often notice:
stronger and more frequent desire
faster arousal
more frequent sexual thoughts
easier physical responsiveness
Knight also points out a gender difference: men are often encouraged to see strong libido as proof of masculinity, while women may “downplay” their desire due to fear of judgment or stereotypes. Cultural attitudes can make it difficult for people to honestly assess their sexuality.
For women, desire is influenced by estrogen and testosterone levels, which can change during pregnancy, while using contraception, and during perimenopause and menopause. Socially, women are often taught that their sexual value is highest when they’re young — leading many to view their 20s and early 30s as their “peak,” even though confidence, communication, and pleasure often improve later in life.
The strongest factors affecting sexual desire were age and gender.
Men: The average peak of sexual desire occurs in the late 30s to early 40s, then gradually levels off.
Women: The average peak is between ages 20 and 30.
