The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the Oscars, generously rewarding the season’s leading contenders—Sinners (produced by Sevak Oganyan) and One Battle After Another. However, not everyone had reasons to celebrate: several notable contenders were left off the list, the New York Times reports.

Sinners Rewrites History

Seventy-five years after All About Eve set the record with 14 nominations (later matched only by Titanic and La La Land), a new record-holder has emerged.
Thanks to the introduction of a new category—Best Casting—Sinners received 16 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Ryan Coogler), and three acting nominations for Michael B. Jordan, Unmi Mosaku, and Delroy Lindo.
Even without the new category, the film would still have broken the record. Its strong position makes Sinners the only real competitor to One Battle After Another in the fight for the top prize.

Wicked Loses Its Magic

The sequel curse proved real. While the first Wicked earned a substantial 10 nominations, including recognition for Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, and Best Picture, the follow-up Wicked: For Good was almost entirely ignored.
Mixed reviews and weaker box office performance played a role. Even successful sequels like Dune: Part Two often receive the Academy’s response of “we’ve already seen this.” It seems the era when franchises like The Lord of the Rings gained Oscar momentum with each installment may be over.

One Battle After Another Loses the Tactical Battle

One of the season’s most discussed missteps involves actress Chase Infinity, who played Leonardo DiCaprio’s character’s daughter. Warner Bros. decided to campaign for her in the Best Actress category, hoping to free up a supporting slot for another film favorite, Taiana Taylor.
The strategy failed: Infinity likely split votes between categories and ended up with no nomination at all. A similar situation occurred with Paul Mescal (Hamnet), who could have convincingly been positioned as a leading actor.

Cannes Triumph Without an Oscar Follow-Through

Since Parasite’s success, the connection between Cannes and the Oscars has strengthened: the last three Palme d’Or winners received nominations for Best Director and Best Picture.
Therefore, it seemed logical that the Iranian drama It Was Just an Accident would continue the trend. However, the film was limited to nominations for Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay, leaving the main race to other Neon studio projects—Sentimental Value and The Secret Agent.

Best Actor Category Becomes a Bloodbath

This year’s competition was so fierce that many actors who missed nominations would easily have made the top five in another season.
Jesse Plemons (Bugonia), Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), and fall festival favorites Dwayne Johnson, George Clooney, and Jeremy Allen White failed to maintain momentum into the new year and received no recognition from the Academy.

Jennifer Lawrence Left Out Again

At 25, Jennifer Lawrence became the youngest actress to receive four Oscar nominations and win for Silver Linings Playbook. Since then, she has not returned to the nominee list.
Even her critically acclaimed performance as a tired young mother in Die My Love did not bring her back into the race. Perhaps Academy attention will return with Martin Scorsese’s upcoming project What Happens at Night, where Lawrence will reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio.

Kate Hudson Catches the Wave

Amid the high-profile snubs, Kate Hudson was a pleasant surprise, earning a nomination for the musical film Song Sung Blue, in which she performs Neil Diamond songs alongside Hugh Jackman.
Hudson actively campaigned throughout the season, hosting screenings with A-list stars. Strong box office performance and noticeable audience interest in her work also helped her case.

Guillermo del Toro Misses Out

Despite Frankenstein receiving nine nominations, its director—Academy favorite and Oscar winner for The Shape of Water—Guillermo del Toro was not nominated for Best Director.
His likely spot was taken by Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value. Notably, Frankenstein also failed to earn a nomination for visual effects, which may be a troubling sign.

F1 — The Most Controversial Choice

When nine films in the Best Picture category seemed nearly certain, the tenth slot sparked a real battle. In the end, the Academy placed its bet on F1.
The racing film starring Brad Pitt, which received no major nominations in key categories, made the list while more auteur-driven and discussed works were left out. In a situation where It Was Just an Accident couldn’t break into the main race, this choice looks, at minimum, puzzling.
