Authorities in Fujiyoshida, near the iconic Mount Fuji, have announced the cancellation of the annual cherry blossom festival at Arakurayama Sengen Park. The reason: an overwhelming number of unruly tourists seeking Instagram-perfect photos, which “disrupt the peaceful life of local residents.”

“Behind the beautiful landscapes lies reality: the quiet life of our residents is at risk. We decided to draw the curtain on a festival that has been held for 10 years,” said Mayor Shigeru Horiuchi.

The festival, which previously drew up to 200,000 visitors annually and around 10,000 per day, had become a major attraction. However, the surge in tourism, amplified by viral social media content, created numerous problems:

• Traffic jams on local roads

• Litter and discarded cigarette butts

• Tourists entering private homes to use bathrooms

• Unauthorized behavior in private yards

• Parents complaining about children being pushed on school routes

In 2025, Japan welcomed a record 42.7 million tourists, putting additional pressure on small towns and cultural landmarks.

City officials plan to manage visitor flow through increased security, temporary parking, and portable toilets. Still, even without the festival, the park — with its views of Mount Fuji, cherry blossoms, and the five-story pagoda — remains a popular tourist destination.

Experts note that the phenomenon of “tourist chaos” is fueled by the combination of a weak yen and viral social media content, making Japan an even more coveted destination for photographers and bloggers.
