While Dubai is synonymous with luxury and glamour, some expats are growing weary of its drawbacks: a perceived “soulless” atmosphere, influencer culture, long workdays, and high living costs, reports the Daily Mail. For those looking to flee what’s been dubbed “Dubai depression,” a nearby emirate is becoming the chic alternative.

Just an hour from glittering Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) is known as the “emirate of nature,” boasting 42 miles of coastline along the Arabian Gulf. Unlike Dubai, it lacks the bustling tourism and ostentatious luxury, yet offers many of the same benefits.

A Haven for Expats and Influencers

In northern UAE, RAK is fast becoming a favorite among British expats. Entrepreneur Ben Moss shares glimpses of life in the emirate on TikTok (@mr_moss_media), promoting RAK as a refined alternative to Dubai.
“Previously, Brits would go to Dubai first, then move to Ras Al Khaimah. Now, many are choosing this emirate from the start,” Moss notes in a recent video.
He showcases almost-empty beaches and highlights the Al Qawasim waterfront, calling RAK “the best place in the UAE” for its real cost of living and business opportunities.

Affordable Living with Adventure

Living costs are significantly lower than in Dubai: utilities average £90 per month in RAK compared to £129 in Dubai, while a one-bedroom apartment rents for £576 versus £1,700 in the city center. Salaries are lower too—around £1,300 in RAK versus £3,000 in Dubai—but residents are drawn to the climate, accessible schools, and pristine waters.
RAK also offers unique experiences: desert dunes, mountain landscapes, and untouched beaches provide a sense of adventure rarely found in Dubai.

Luxury Without the Crowds

Moving from Dubai to RAK doesn’t mean sacrificing luxury. The emirate boasts several premium hotels—without crowds of influencers taking breakfast selfies. In 2026, new luxury properties will open, including Sajj A Mantis Collection Mountain Lodge, Hilton Marjan Island Beach Resort & Spa with panoramic pools, and JW Marriott Al Marjan Island Resort on the beach.

The dining scene is equally impressive, offering traditional Arabic cuisine, Asian fusion, European dishes, and hidden gastronomic gems. Soon, Ladurée, tashas, and Antonia will open, serving Parisian desserts, Italian fare, and popular all-day menus.

Costs and Transport

RAK’s luxury hotels are roughly half the price of Dubai, with rooms up to £290 per night versus £503 in Dubai. Mid-range accommodations range from £44–£95, compared to £60–£120 in Dubai. Transport and active leisure activities are also cheaper, allowing visitors to save up to £60 per day—enough for upgraded meals, extra activities, or an additional night’s stay.

Luxury with Soul

While Dubai remains a hotspot for the wealthy and famous, Ras Al Khaimah offers a balanced mix: stunning beaches, mountains, historic villages, luxury hotels, and top-tier restaurants—without the crowds, overcrowded venues, or soaring prices.

RAK is quickly proving that luxury can come with a sense of soul.
