Christina Aguilera faced a wave of criticism following her concert this week in Mexico City. Her performance at the Palacio de los Deportes became controversial after an awkward slip of the tongue — the singer mistakenly referred to Mexico’s capital as “New Mexico.”

“I love you so much, New Mexico!” Aguilera told the crowd, unintentionally confusing the U.S. state with the country hosting the show.

Fans were also upset with the unusually short set, which lasted only 55 minutes, despite a two-hour show being advertised. Criticism extended to her delayed entrance, modest stage design, and lackluster lighting.

Social media reactions were swift and unrestrained. One fan tweeted, “I was there — worst show of my life. I used to like her, but this concert felt cheap and insincere.” Others took a lighter approach, joking, “Christina came to Mexico City, went on stage an hour late, called it New Mexico, and played for only 55 minutes. But I still can’t hate her!”

Fans also noted the absence of some of Aguilera’s biggest hits, including Candyman and Come On Over, from the setlist.

However, some attendees offered a more forgiving perspective. “To be fair, she said ‘Mexico’ three times before that awkward moment,” one fan pointed out. Another added, “She’s performing in different cities every day and must be exhausted. One small mistake isn’t a reason to tear her apart.”
