New research published in Archives of Sexual Behavior suggests that women in stable romantic relationships report slightly higher sexual satisfaction than men. The findings challenge the common belief that women experience less pleasure due to physical and social barriers.

The study focused on long-term partnerships, where women appear to derive significant subjective enjoyment from intimacy. Researchers aimed to clarify decades of mixed evidence on gender differences in sexual satisfaction.

Cultural stereotypes and biological factors have often suggested women face unique challenges. Anatomical differences can increase the likelihood of pain or infection during sex, while social norms frequently prioritize male pleasure and stigmatize female sexuality—a phenomenon known as the “sexual double standard.” These factors have contributed to the perception that women enjoy sex less than men.

However, the researchers hypothesized that stable romantic relationships could shift this dynamic. Couples in long-term partnerships often develop trust and communicate more openly about desires. Women feel safer and face less stigma than in casual encounters.

Although the so-called “orgasm gap”—where men more frequently reach orgasm during partnered sex—is well documented, the study examined whether this affects overall satisfaction.

The research used integrative data analysis, combining raw participant data from multiple independent studies into a single large sample, allowing subtle patterns to emerge that might go unnoticed in smaller studies.

The study included two analyses across five Western countries:

• The first analyzed 11,841 participants from 29 cross-sectional studies who rated overall sexual satisfaction.
• The second followed 1,827 participants keeping daily sexual experience diaries for 2–4 weeks to assess moment-to-moment pleasure during specific encounters.

In both cases, women in romantic relationships reported slightly higher sexual satisfaction than men. The results remained consistent even after controlling for factors such as overall relationship satisfaction and frequency of sexual activity.

Lead author Ashlyn Brady, Associate Professor of Psychology at Sweet Briar College, said the results were unexpected, as previous studies often showed higher male satisfaction. She noted that long-term relationships provide a safe and supportive environment that reduces barriers to female pleasure.

Some small variations were linked to age and relationship length. Past research also indicates women experience more orgasms and satisfaction in stable relationships than in casual encounters. However, individuals open to short-term intimacy may experience similar pleasure regardless of context.

Researchers emphasized that the gender difference in satisfaction was small. Despite statistical significance in this large sample, the practical effect is minimal. Women still experience more pain and fewer orgasms than men, but overall sexual life remains positive.

Brady concluded that men and women may be more similar in sexual experiences than commonly assumed and called for further research including diverse age groups, cultures, and gender identities.
