Local authorities have banned intrusive approaches toward visitors by street promoters, restaurant hosts, tour operators, and vendors who persistently offer services in public spaces.

Violations of the new rules will carry fines ranging from approximately $30 to $585.

The decision comes amid a serious overtourism problem: on peak days, up to 50,000 tourists can arrive on the island, putting significant strain on infrastructure and reducing the quality of the visitor experience.

To ease the pressure, authorities are also introducing additional restrictions:
• from May, group tours will be limited to 40 participants;
• tour guides will be prohibited from using large identifying symbols such as flags and umbrellas;
• the measures are intended to reduce crowding in key tourist areas.

Capri has long been known for strict rules designed to preserve its character. As far back as the 1960s, the island banned loud music, sleeping in public places, and picnics in parks.

Local business associations have supported the initiative, saying the new measures will make the island more comfortable for both residents and tourists.

Hospitality representatives say better regulation of tourist flows will help relieve pressure on the most crowded areas — especially the main squares and port districts.

Officials emphasize that the goal is not to restrict tourism, but to make it more manageable amid growing visitor numbers.
