A rare and previously unseen work by anonymous British artist Banksy is poised to set a new auction record, with an estimated value reaching an astonishing $18 million.
The painting, titled Girl and Balloon on Found Landscape, will go under the hammer on May 20 during an invitation-only auction in New York организованном by Fair Warning. Before the sale, the artwork made its public debut inside Tiffany & Co.’s iconic Fifth Avenue flagship store.
The piece merges two of Banksy’s most recognizable artistic signatures: his legendary Girl with Balloon motif and the ultra-rare Crude Oil series, in which the artist reimagines traditional paintings through the lens of modern chaos and social commentary.
With a presale estimate of $13–18 million, the work is already considered a potential record-breaker — and could become the most expensive Banksy artwork ever sold at auction.
According to organizers, demand for the piece rivals interest seen around the biggest contemporary art sales of recent decades. Some market insiders have even described Banksy as “one of the defining artists of his generation.”
Created in 2012, the painting belongs to a pivotal moment in Banksy’s career — the period when he evolved from underground street artist into a global art-market phenomenon. In the composition, the iconic Girl with Balloon image is layered over a repurposed landscape painting, creating the artist’s trademark collision between classical aesthetics and disruptive street-art symbolism.
The Crude Oil series itself became famous for Banksy’s deliberate “interventions” into traditional art. The collection includes works inspired by Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and religious imagery, all altered with symbols of consumerism, decay, and political satire.
Interest in Banksy exploded globally in 2018, when a framed version of Girl with Balloon famously self-destructed moments after being sold at auction in London. The shredded artwork was subsequently renamed Love is in the Bin and later resold for $25.4 million, becoming one of the most talked-about moments in contemporary art history.
Experts now believe Girl and Balloon on Found Landscape could become the next landmark Banksy sale — potentially joining the ranks of iconic market moments associated with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.
The auction itself is expected to be as theatrical as the artwork. It will take place on the upper floor of Tiffany & Co.’s luxury Manhattan flagship, where dozens of works by major contemporary artists are currently displayed, transforming the boutique into a hybrid between gallery, showroom, and spectacle.
Organizers are betting that the combination of rarity, instantly recognizable imagery, and the mythology surrounding Banksy’s identity will attract some of the world’s most powerful collectors — and perhaps rewrite another chapter in the economics of contemporary art.
