'Shrek 5' First Teaser: Beloved Characters Return to an Even Wilder World

14:34, June 19

Universal Pictures has released the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Shrek 5, offering audiences a crystal-clear look at the direction co-directors Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn are taking the franchise ahead of its big-screen return on June 30, 2027.

The trailer's opening strategic move is highly telling. Instead of immediately overwhelming the viewer with new footage, the video kicks off with the classic flipping of a fairy-tale book's pages—a brief recap of the original 2001 film. This idyllic moment is abruptly interrupted by Donkey, who declares that it is time for a proper "upgrade."

And this is not just a joke for the sake of a joke. The interruption serves as a direct acknowledgement of the animation update that is noticeable throughout the teaser. The characters' visual language has become slightly more textured and grounded. The creators have modernized the look while carefully preserving the franchise's aesthetic DNA.

The new location—a metropolis named "Further Further Away"—stands out as the main and most intriguing element of the expanding cinematic universe. While the classic "Far Far Away" operated as a traditional fairy-tale monarchy perfect for satire, this new setting appears much darker, more urban, and chaotic.

A dungeon, a prison cell, and a sketchy alleyway snowman—a blatant and sharp parody of Olaf from Frozen, who asks, "Do you want to build a snowman?"—all indicate that this fresh environment will provide the franchise with far more gritty material to work with than the polished fairy-tale settings of previous installments.

A comical moment featuring Gingy (the Gingerbread Man) declaring that he is "baked out of his mind, like a goddamn bakery," while showing off the gumdrop buttons on his buttocks, has already become the trailer's most talked-about scene.

The introduction of Shrek and Fiona’s three now-teenage children offers the clearest signal of where the narrative's emotional and dramatic engine will lie. The teenagers are voiced by an all-star cast:

  • Zendaya (Felicia)

  • Marcello Hernández (Fergus)

  • Skyler Gisondo (Farkl
