Footage of a Japanese fan's sheer despair instantly flooded social media after his national team let victory slip away in a dramatic World Cup match against Brazil. But were these emotions as genuine as they appeared at first glance?

The Japanese national team (the Samurai Blue) stunned the favorites by scoring an early goal, heading into halftime with a 1:0 lead. Even though Casemiro equalized early in the second half, fans believed until the very end that the game would go into extra time. However, a precise strike from Gabriel Martinelli in the final minutes shattered the Asian team's hopes, sending the Seleção early into the Round of 16.

While cameras captured heartbroken Japanese fans all over the stadium, one supporter instantly stole the spotlight, The Daily Mail reports.

Right in the epicenter of a celebrating Brazilian section, a guy in a blue jersey with hair dyed to match his national team's colors shut his eyes tightly and screamed into the sky in indescribable agony. It looked exactly like a scene from a dramatic anime come to life. In a fit of rage, he even ripped off his kimono-style cape.

Brazilian fans tried to drape their own national flag over him as a gesture of comfort, but the Japanese fan abruptly rejected it. However, the Brazilians didn't back down and ultimately enveloped him in friendly hugs, showcasing true sporting solidarity.

Social media instantly picked up the clip, marveling at the fan's passion:

• "Imagine experiencing the worst pain of your life while everyone around you is celebrating the very thing that caused it," one user sympathized on X (Twitter).

• "Hard to watch! Japan was one of the best teams at this World Cup! Huge respect to them," another wrote.

• "To be honest, it’s so cool to see fans from different countries ultimately finding common ground and hugging it out," a third noted.

• "I was dying laughing when I saw this live. It instantly lifted my mood after our defeat," a Japanese fan admitted.

Although this moment became one of the most memorable and talked-about highlights of the Round of 32, its authenticity is highly questionable. It appears we are looking at a staged stunt for the sake of likes.

Just moments before delivering his "epic drama" on air, the international broadcast caught a curious detail: the very same Japanese fan, sporting a wide grin, was seen handing his smartphone to a Brazilian sitting in front of him. He passed the phone in landscape mode, clearly asking to have his performance recorded on video.

The guy's emotions might have been fake, but the match result is absolutely real. Brazil, once again, marches on to the Round of 16.

The five-time world champions will play their next match on July 5th at the New York New Jersey Stadium, where they will face the winner of the Ivory Coast vs. Norway matchup.
