Mariah Carey has unexpectedly ditched her usual glamour in favor of an intentionally casual grunge look. The 57-year-old singer was spotted on the streets of New York wearing a pair of jeans that look as though they have already been stained — and yet cost $850.

Instead of diamonds and eveningwear, the star opted for a pair of wide-leg Acne Studios jeans priced at $850. As intended by the brand, the jeans are specially finished with hand-applied paint marks and stains designed to create the effect of genuinely dirty denim.

The singer paired the jeans with a $580 layered Acne Studios mesh top featuring doodle-like graphics reminiscent of scribbles drawn with a marker.

Still, Carey did not completely abandon her signature luxury. She accessorized the look with $430 oval Gucci sunglasses and her signature $1,000 Hermès platform sandals.

Interestingly, Jennifer Lopez has already been spotted wearing the same jeans. In April 2024, the singer was seen walking around New York in the pair, which at the time retailed for $620.

The coincidence is particularly intriguing given the two pop stars’ long-running history. In 2003, when asked about Lopez, Carey delivered the now-iconic line: “I don’t know her.” Last year, she once again made her feelings toward her fellow singer clear during an appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live.

“How could I suddenly start knowing her, you know?” Carey said with a smirk.
