Virtual actress Tilly Norwood, generated entirely by artificial intelligence, is gearing up for her big-screen debut. She will play the lead role in a feature film produced by the very studio that brought this controversial digital artist to life.
British studio Particle6, which positions itself as a developer of film and TV content powered by "pure AI and hybrid neural networks," announced on Monday the start of production on a movie where Norwood will "take on the leading role."
Particle6 founder Elin van der Velden, a former actress herself, first introduced Tilly Norwood to the public in 2025. This came after the studio's team developed roughly 2,000 iterations of the AI model, progressively training it in the art of acting.
The studio describes the upcoming film, which takes place in a "surreal digital space somewhere in the Cloud," as a "coming-of-age story steeped in existential AI chaos."
The plot serves as a metaphor for reality: Norwood portrays an AI entity that lacks its own lived experiences but has access to the childhood memories and personal histories of real human beings.
According to Van der Velden, the studio’s goal is to showcase the capabilities of artificial intelligence to both the film industry and the general public. Particle6 emphasizes that traditional filmmaking professionals—including directors, screenwriters, and editors—will be brought on board to work side-by-side with AI specialists.
Norwood's emergence in 2025 triggered a fierce backlash within the film industry. Industry professionals staged protests, asserting that acting roles must remain the exclusive domain of humans, rather than synthetic performers.
In September of last year, Hollywood union SAG-AFTRA released an official statement stressing that it does not recognize Norwood as an actress, and that "creativity is and must remain strictly human-centric."
As a reminder, restrictions on the use of AI in film and television production were the main bone of contention during the 2023 negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major Hollywood studios, which led to the first massive actors' strike in 15 years.
At the time, the union demanded guarantees that studios would not replace human labor with AI, and the resulting labor agreement tightly restricted the deployment of such technologies.
