The ancient Romans firmly believed that beetroot was a powerful aphrodisiac, prescribing it to lovers who lacked passion. More than two thousand years later, this humble root vegetable (Beta vulgaris) is increasingly dubbed "nature's Viagra" in the press, with claims that it helps men combat erectile dysfunction and boosts sexual libido in women, The Telegraph reports.
However, elevating your intimate life is far from the only perk of this vibrant crimson vegetable. Scientists link regular beetroot consumption to lower blood pressure, enhanced athletic endurance, improved circulation, and even brain protection against age-related decline.
"I love beetroot because it's an affordable, versatile, and incredibly nutrient-dense food," says nutritionist Emma Bardwell, author of The Fibre Effect. "It’s packed with fiber, folate, magnesium, Vitamin C, betalains (powerful antioxidants), and natural nitrates that improve blood flow."
Here is a detailed breakdown of what the ordinary beetroot is truly capable of.
Beetroot’s impact on the reproductive system is entirely due to its exceptionally high concentration of nitrates.
While the word "nitrates" often conjures up images of processed meats (like bacon), where they are added as preservatives that increase bowel cancer risks, plant-based nitrates behave completely differently in the body.
"Thanks to antioxidants, they are converted into nitric oxide, which helps blood vessels relax and dilate," Bardwell explains.
Healthy circulation is the foundation of sexual function for both men and women. Nitric oxide widens blood vessels and improves blood flow throughout the body, including the pelvic organs.
While the evidence base for using beetroot specifically against erectile dysfunction remains largely theoretical, experts see a clear logic. Laura Southern, a nutritional therapist and founder of London Food Therapy, agrees: "Erectile issues are frequently linked to poor vascular health. Nitrate-rich foods help restore vessel elasticity, and without good blood flow, an erection is physically impossible." Notably, popular erectile dysfunction medications operate on a similar principle by enhancing the effects of nitric oxide.
In women, increased blood flow to the pelvic area helps accelerate sexual arousal. Additionally, beetroot contains the trace element boron, which supports healthy sex hormone levels.
Perhaps the most scientifically proven medical secret of beetroot is its ability to normalize blood pressure. Once again, nitrates are the driving force.
When we consume beetroot, the resulting nitric oxide signals blood vessels to expand. Blood flows through them more easily, pressure on the arterial walls drops, and the workload on the heart decreases. Multiple studies confirm that drinking 250ml of beetroot juice daily (or one concentrated 70ml shot) can significantly ease life for individuals with hypertension.
Beetroot juice is a cult-favorite product among runners, cyclists, and triathletes.
"When blood vessels dilate, muscles receive oxygen and nutrients much faster during a workout," says Laura Southern. This allows athletes to train longer and harder before fatigue sets in.
A major 2025 scientific review demonstrated that beetroot juice significantly increases (maximal oxygen consumption) in healthy adults and improves shuttle run performance.
Another 2025 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition revealed that rock climbers who drank beetroot juice before training demonstrated a higher pain threshold, better flexibility, endurance, and strength compared to the control group.
A number of researchers believe that beetroot supports prostate health due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory tests have shown that the antioxidant compounds betanin and apigenin, found in beetroot flesh and leaves, can slow down the growth and spread of prostate cancer cells.
While human clinical trials have yet to be conducted, Laura Southern emphasizes: "Regular beetroot consumption helps combat chronic inflammation in the body, which is a known trigger for many oncological diseases."
The link between beetroot and brain health is actively being studied, and scientists hold high hopes for it.
Since nitric oxide improves overall blood circulation, it naturally impacts the brain. Research shows that older adults who follow a high-nitrate diet (including beetroot juice) experience improved micro-ventilation and blood flow to the frontal lobes. These specific areas are responsible for decision-making, memory, and executive functions—and are the hardest hit by aging.
It has also been proven that the pigment betanin, which gives beetroot its rich deep-red color, can block the formation of beta-amyloid plaques—the toxic protein clumps that destroy the brain in Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, beetroot contains uridine, which stimulates the creation of new synaptic connections between neurons.
Beetroot is rich in fiber, which stimulates peristalsis and acts as a prebiotic—fueling the trillions of beneficial bacteria living in our digestive tract. A healthy gut microbiome is directly linked to everything from robust immunity and good digestion to stable metabolism and heart health.
Due to its characteristic earthy flavor, beetroot isn't everyone's favorite. However, this taste can easily be masked:
Add acidity and fats: Emma Bardwell recommends pairing beetroot with balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, Greek yogurt, tahini, feta, or goat cheese.
Boost it with Vitamin C: Eating beetroot alongside citrus fruits, bell peppers, or parsley significantly enhances the absorption of iron from the root vegetable.
Roast it: When roasted, complex starches break down, making the beetroot sweeter, stripping away the raw earthy flavor, and making it easier to digest.
Experiment with textures: Grate it into Asian-style salads, blend it into hummus or smoothies, or try pickling it.
Pro-Tip: The most beneficial way to consume beetroot is to eat it raw in salads or drink it as a freshly squeezed juice (or smoothie). This preserves all of its heat-sensitive vitamins.
