Elon Musk accuses "The Odyssey" director of "desecrating Homer"

10:45, July 8

The world's richest man, Elon Musk, has ramped up his criticism of Christopher Nolan following the release of his upcoming film The Odyssey, accusing the director of "desecrating Homer" to satisfy Oscar criteria. Musk went as far as publicly calling Nolan a "worm."

These statements came as the film's official trailer racked up hundreds of thousands of dislikes on YouTube, alongside a barrage of negative comments targeting the cast and the overall tone of the movie. In response to the backlash, Universal Pictures was forced to disable comments on the social media platform X.

"Chris Nolan desecrated Homer and crawled on his knees just to comply with the woke agenda required to win an Oscar. What a worm," Musk posted.

From Casting to Costumes: What Sparked the Boycott?

The Odyssey has faced a prolonged wave of criticism, primarily directed at its casting choices. The most controversial roles include:

  • Lupita Nyong'o (a Black actress) as Helen of Troy;

  • Elliot Page (a transgender actor) as Sinon;

  • Zendaya as Athena;

  • Travis Scott as the Bard.

Beyond the casting, heated debates have erupted over the use of American accents, contemporary language in the dialogue, and costume designs that many deemed historically inaccurate or too drab for Ancient Greece.

Christopher Nolan himself has defended the project, stating that the diverse cast and the design of the armor are a perfect fit for a mythological reimagining. Critics, however, counter that these decisions stray far too wide from the traditional canons of the Hollywood historical epic.
