"Satan Will Come for You": Melania Gibson Warns 'The Passion of the Christ' Sequel Screenwriter

14:35, July 20

Mel Gibson’s longtime collaborator, 76-year-old screenwriter Randall Wallace, has revealed the chilling spiritual warning the two-time Oscar winner gave him before they began working on the sequel to the legendary 2004 blockbuster The Passion of the Christ.

Wallace, who previously teamed up with the 70-year-old director on Braveheart, We Were Soldiers, and Hacksaw Ridge, co-wrote the screenplay for the upcoming sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ, alongside Gibson and his brother, Donal Gibson.

Appearing on the Arroyo Grande podcast, Wallace recalled proposing the idea of filming the story of the Resurrection to Gibson back in 2016 during the promotional tour for their war drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Gibson’s response was both profound and haunting.

"After a long pause, Mel said something incredibly beautiful: 'If we do this, we don’t do it for the money, and we don’t do it to get even with people who hated us or treated us badly.' I said, 'Amen,'" Wallace shared. "And then he added, 'You do know Satan will come for you, right?'"

An Epic Scale Split in Two Parts

Gibson, Wallace, and Donal Gibson spent roughly six to eight years writing and refining the script. According to the creators, the narrative surrounding the Resurrection proved so vast that they decided to split the story into two feature-length films.

In May 2026, Gibson officially announced that filming had wrapped:

  • 'The Resurrection of the Christ: Part 1' is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2027—coinciding with the Feast of the Ascension.

  • 'The Resurrection of the Christ: Part 2' will follow a year later on May 25, 2028.

Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over the lead role of Jesus Christ in the first installment, a role famously originated by Jim Caviezel in the 2004 film.

"This film is the most important body of work of my entire life, requiring everything I have to give as a filmmaker and an artist," Mel Gibson stated. "For me, this is far more than just a movie. It is a mission I have carried for over 20 years: to tell what I believe is the most important story in human history."

Something Audiences Have Never Seen Before

The original The Passion of the Christ, released in February 2004, depicted the final 12 hours of Jesus' life and became a global phenomenon. On a $30 million budget, the film grossed over $610 million worldwide, despite sparking intense debate over its graphic depiction of violence.

Speaking on what audiences can expect from the long-awaited sequel, Wallace highlighted Gibson's unique vision of the spiritual realm. "In some ways, there will be elements in the film that viewers have never seen before. Yet, I believe it will be the most faithful and canonical rendition—capturing all the awe and mystery that Christians feel when thinking about the Resurrection."
