In the lexicon of dress codes, few phrases strike as much fear into middle-aged women as "special occasion wear."

Yet even the grandest wedding is a walk in the park compared to the dilemma presented by your husband's first day at 10 Downing Street.

As the wife of the new British Prime Minister, your outfit is destined to face far tougher scrutiny than any Mother of the Bride's dress, writes the Daily Mail.

We do not know much about Andy Burnham's wife, Marie-France van Heel — a 56-year-old Dutch-born marketer to whom he has been married for 25 years.

However, when it comes to outfits for major events, she seems no different from the rest of us: prone to simply throwing money at a problem in the hope that it will go away. And that, presumably, is why she spent £850 on an ice-blue dress by Victoria Beckham.

Van Heel’s dress, named "Edith," is the epitome of what a modern Prime Minister's spouse should wear. It looks polished yet safe, stylish yet understated.

Instead of predictable "Labour Red," she chose a shade of blue that complemented her skin tone and blonde hair. Most importantly, she championed a brand that proudly waves the flag for British fashion.

Still, the fact remains striking: of all the labels van Heel (known to friends as Frankie) could have chosen, she settled on Victoria Beckham — a designer whose vast fortune is bound to raise eyebrows among Labour’s traditional working-class electorate.

As, indeed, will the price tag. Some Labour voters will undoubtedly feel that a dress costing nearly £900 is a rather strange choice on the day your husband named tackling homelessness as his top priority in his maiden Downing Street speech.

Yet she is hardly the first Prime Minister’s wife to see her wardrobe choices sacrificed on the altar of her husband's political reputation.

When Victoria Starmer became First Lady in July 2024, she was criticized in some quarters for wearing a £275 red dress by Me+Em.

Two months later, she faced fierce backlash for attending the Edeline Lee show at London Fashion Week in a £2,200 polka-dot dress that she hadn't even bought, but had borrowed from the designer.
