A popular content creator was tragically killed by her estranged husband during divorce proceedings. The tragedy unfolded just weeks after she publicly accused him of pedophilia on her social media page, People reports.
On July 11, 43-year-old Sarah Gilson posted a video on TikTok participating in the popular "Netflix Documentary" trend. As part of this trend, users simulate an interview for the streaming platform, sharing anything from harmless inside jokes to shocking personal revelations. "Preparing for when Netflix releases a documentary about my ex-husband, who I just found out was a pedophile," Gilson wrote over the video of herself sitting down in front of the camera.
The caption under the video read: "I wish this was a joke."
Less than two weeks later, late Thursday evening on July 23, Sarah Gilson and her 48-year-old husband, Jeremiah "Sean" Duffy, were found dead with gunshot wounds at her home in Owasso, Oklahoma.
The 911 call came from a child residing in the home. Police arrived at the scene around 11:15 p.m. As representatives of the Owasso Police Department confirmed, Duffy shot Gilson before taking his own life. The identities of the deceased were officially confirmed by a family member.
As it turned out, this was far from the first time Gilson had attempted to protect herself from her husband. Back in 2021, she filed twice for protective orders against Duffy, but both cases were dismissed due to her failure to appear in court.
The situation escalated dramatically this summer:
June 10: Gilson filed for an emergency protective order. The court immediately ordered Duffy to leave their shared home and stay at least 100 yards away from his wife.
June 23: The protective order was extended until August 24.
In her application, Gilson stated that Duffy possessed firearms, had threatened suicide, and was "on the run."
On the same day Sarah filed for protection (June 10), another restraining order was issued against Duffy. This time, it was filed by a local resident on behalf of her minor daughter.
The victim was a 15-year-old girl who played on a youth basketball team coached by Duffy. According to court records, Duffy kissed and touched the teenager, leading to another team coach catching him in the act.
The girl later told her mother that the man had exhibited inappropriate behavior before: sending her text messages, inviting her to his hotel room during an away tournament, and offering her money for "keeping quiet."
