Sam Smith has officially confirmed that they are engaged to their partner of nearly three years, 32-year-old fashion designer Christian Cowan, in a new interview with The New York Times.

The joyous announcement coincides with the reveal of Smith’s upcoming fifth studio album, titled Hazel Eyes. The Grammy-winning singer shared that the album's name is an intimate homage to the mesmerizing eye color of their new fiancé.

The romance has deeply influenced Smith's music. The artist wrote the album's opening track, "Everlasting Love," on the eve of their very first date with Cowan. While Smith's discography is famously built on heart-wrenching ballads of unrequited love, they revealed this new track marks their first song written about "mutual, true love."

A Quiet Romance Built Out of the Spotlight

The couple was first spotted together in December 2022 at the White House during the signing ceremony for the Respect for Marriage Act. However, they kept their romance private, waiting until May 2024 to officially confirm their relationship status.

Smith has previously opened up about their decision to keep their love life out of the public eye: "In previous relationships, I shared personal things online and talked about it here and there. But I don't want to do that anymore," Smith explained in a previous interview with GQ U.K. "Being loved is a priceless gift to yourself, and my job can sometimes interfere with the purity of that feeling."
