Polish Billionaire Erects Europe’s Tallest Virgin Mary Statue for €23 Million

22:20, July 29

In the small Polish village of Konotopie, framed by picturesque fields, a majestic 55-meter monument has risen. As the country's Catholic churches grow emptier amidst rapid secularization, a local tycoon decided to present believers with a truly royal gift by building Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary.

The official consecration and opening of the concrete-and-steel giant is scheduled for August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Finishing touches are currently underway at the site, but pilgrims and curious onlookers are already arriving by the busload.

This lavish gesture cost local multimillionaire Roman Karkosik (founder of the industrial giant Boryszew) approximately 100 million PLN (around €23.1 million). The 75-year-old magnate lives nearby in a restored 18th-century palace in the neighboring town of Kikoł.

"Last Sunday he drove by to inspect the construction site from the back seat of his Maybach," laughs Andrzej, a security guard at the complex.

"God's Grace or Money Down the Drain?": What the Polish People Think

The construction has sparked fierce debate among believers and local residents:

  • Devout pilgrims are thrilled: "People come here in search of faith. It's a true miracle that is simply unforgettable," share early visitors.

  • Critics are outraged: "Instead of a giant statue of the Virgin Mary, this money should have been invested in building a new hospital or an orphanage," fumes a couple visiting from a nearby town.

  • Skeptics see opportunism: "Right now, 90% of people are only thinking about what profit they can gain from this and how much they can scoop into their own pockets," sighs Wanda, a pilgrim.

Clergy members, meanwhile, hope that the monumental Blessed Virgin will help bring Poles back to the Church—according to recent data, the proportion of Catholics in Poland has dropped from 88% to 71% over the past decade.

Economic Lifeline for a Struggling Rural Area

Local authorities are completely delighted by the ambitious project. The village of Konotopie and nearby Kikoł are among the poorest municipalities in the region.

Renata Gołębiowska, the mayor of Kikoł, hopes that the 55-meter Virgin Mary will transform the impoverished area into a major pilgrimage center (similar to the famous Częstochowa and its "Black Madonna," which attracts up to 5 million tourists a year), creating new jobs and drawing investors.

For context, the Polish Virgin Mary ranks second in height worldwide, trailing only the 98-meter "Mother of All Asia" monument in the Philippines.
