Viral social media videos reveal dense throngs of people in Rome, endless lines along Lake Como, and train platforms mobbed by passengers in Cinque Terre. Many travelers admit that what was supposed to be a dream vacation has turned into pure stress.

With school holidays under way, the situation is only escalating as thousands of new tourists continue to pour into Italy, dropping right into the epicenter of chaos.

Rome Is "Not for the Faint of Heart"

"Rome right now is not for the faint of heart," one TikTok user captioned her video, showing thousands of people inching through the streets of the Italian capital millimeter by millimeter.

Another popular clip warns: "The crowds in Rome are no joke, especially in the summer heat." Footage shows a sea of people packed around the iconic Trevi Fountain. To get a single photo, tourists are forced to stretch their arms high above the heads of those around them.

Disillusioned travelers shared their frustrations in the comments:

• "Garbage everywhere! I've never seen so many cigarette butts on the ground in my life!"

• "My anxiety over pickpockets near the Trevi Fountain was through the roof."

Incidentally, local authorities have already been forced to cap the number of simultaneous visitors at the Trevi Fountain to 400 people while introducing a €2 entry fee for tourists.

Chaos on the Lakes and Trains

The situation is no better in the north. At Lake Como, tourists face grueling hour-long queues just to board ferries running between popular towns like Varenna, Bellagio, and Como.

In the Cinque Terre region, instead of a romantic seaside getaway, travelers are greeted by crammed platforms and people storming train cars. "Thought I’d escape the crowds… turns out literally everyone else had the same idea," one blogger shared.

Beaches: Reservation Only

To gain some semblance of control over the influx, around 20 popular beaches across Italy have instituted strict visitor caps.

Sardinia’s famed La Pelosa Beach—renowned for its turquoise waters and fine white sand—was named one of Tripadvisor's top beaches in the world. However, dropping by on a whim is out of the question: all reservation slots are completely sold out through September. Similar entry restrictions are currently in force at Cala Goloritzé and Tuerredda beaches.

Overtourism in Southern Europe has been brewing for years. Residents across Barcelona, Mallorca, and Venice regularly take to the streets in protest, arguing that the unrelenting influx inflates housing prices, paralyzes transit networks, and degrades local infrastructure.

Last summer, tourists in Rome likened their experience to being part of a "homogeneous, sweaty herd." In Florence, the gridlock reached such extreme levels that even visitors themselves began sympathizing with local protesters, acknowledging that the situation has spun entirely out of control.
