Organizers of fashion’s biggest night are taking a high-stakes gamble: the 2027 Met Gala exhibition and red carpet will officially honor controversial designer John Galliano.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Vogue officially announced that the former Dior creative director will be the sole focus of the exhibition “John Galliano: Horizon.” The decision sparked an immediate firestorm, as the 65-year-old couture legend remains a deeply polarizing figure following his infamous 2011 anti-Semitic scandal.

According to The New York Times, Met trustee and Vogue Global Editorial Director Anna Wintour has already held a series of closed-door meetings with "influential rabbis and Jewish leaders in New York" to "discuss the risks and hear their thoughts regarding the planned blockbuster show."

Galliano himself and Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton both attended these summit talks, hoping to secure the community's "blessing."

Anti-Semitic Scandal and Redemption

Back in 2011, while serving as the head designer for Dior, Galliano was convicted of a hate crime after slurring anti-Semitic insults at patrons and expressing admiration for Hitler during a heavily intoxicated tirade at a Paris bar.

The fallout was swift: the couturier was ousted from Dior, fined, and ordered to pay court costs. He later issued a formal apology, claiming he had no memory of the incident due to severe drug and alcohol addiction. After a stint in rehab and a career hiatus, he returned to fashion in 2014 as the creative director of Maison Margiela.

Jewish leaders who met with Wintour and Galliano noted that the designer deserves a second chance.

However, Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), raised a cautionary flag:

“The ADL accepted John Galliano’s apology long ago. But timing matters. Anti-Semitism is on the rise, and it all comes down to whether the Met and its partners take real action to combat this issue in fashion, rather than limiting themselves to symbolic gestures around a single exhibition.”

Art vs. Morality

Curator Andrew Bolton, who has dreamed of a solo Galliano exhibition since 2010, emphasized that it is vital for organizers to "bridge the recognition of artistic achievement with ethical responsibility, without letting one erase the other."

Anna Wintour added in a text statement to reporters:

“Galliano's career is not defined by one single misstep. No one else deserves an exhibition of this scale the way he does.”

Public opinion on social media, however, is far less forgiving. Outraged users flooded X (formerly Twitter) to voice their pushback:

“It’s absolutely mind-boggling that during a time of rising anti-Semitism in New York, Anna Wintour decided right now was the time to honor John Galliano,” one user wrote.

Galliano is the visionary credited with transforming Dior into a modern luxury behemoth and creating the iconic Dior Saddle Bag. His archival looks remain a go-to for red carpet heavyweights like Zendaya, Kim Kardashian, Amal Clooney, and Tyla.

The upcoming showcase will make Galliano only the third living designer in history—following Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo—to be honored with a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The 2027 Met Gala will take place next May, with the “John Galliano: Horizon” exhibition open to the public from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028.
